Castro Valley is a suburb of Oakland, California with a population of 63,625. Castro Valley is in Alameda County and is one of the best places to live in California. Castro Valley is unincorporated and governed by the County Board of Supervisors. There is no city hall or city government desired after several elections where most people enjoy the status quo.

People like living here because of the small town, family friendly feel with many verdant hills surrounding the valley where the local businesses are located. Many families and young professionals live in Castro Valley because it is centrally located in the Bay Area with a Bay Area Rapid Transit stop, easy access to freeways that connect to high tech and financial centers.
According to the census, seniors residing in their homes in Castro Valley are higher than the county average. Castro Valley feels safer from crime than surrounding Alameda County communities, but of course, there are incidents that do occur and our local police, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office are the ones who respond to any calls. |
Rents and sales prices are high throughout the Bay Area compared to the National averages. The result is an increasing number of homeless people throughout the Bay Area. Homeless are most noticeable camped out in the urban centers of Oakland and San Francisco. No community is immune.

The major Castro Valley employers are the hospital and related medical services, and the school district. Most people
work outside of the community and commute out. The public schools in Castro Valley are highly rated and the reason for the higher residential property values than the other Alameda County towns bordering it. The Castro Valley Unified School District served 9,269 students in 2019. Ethnically, 5.3% are African American, 0.2% Native Americans, 27.4% Asian, 4.5% Hispanic or Latino, 0.5% Pacific Islander, 26.8% White, 9.8% Two or More Races and 1.7% not reported. There are also private schools, the largest system is a Christian centered school located in Castro Valley and surrounding cities. There is a community hospital with an emergency room and regional trauma center.
There are numerous local parks operated by Hayward Area Parks and regional parks with extensive amenities. A favorite is Lake Chabot for kayaking, fishing, camping, biking and hiking operated by the East Bay Regional Parks. There is a state of the art library in Castro Valley with programs for the entire family. Castro Valley has many small local businesses and restaurants, a Trader Joe’s, numerous fast food restaurants and two large grocery chains. Fine dining is scarce in Castro Valley but due to its central location, you can access fine dining relatively easy in the surrounding towns or a little farther off, Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and San Francisco for your special occasions in 30-45 minutes.
